Pusulpitiya Raja Maha Viharaya

Pusulpitiya Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient temple of historical value located in the village of Pusulpitiya in the Kotmale Nawangama Grama Niladhari Division in the Nuwara Eliya District of the Central Province of Sri Lanka.  Legend has it that during the reign of King Elara, Prince Dutugemunu spent his youth in Anuradhapura.

According to legends, a Brahmin from Dambadiva, according to a description in a treasure trove, got to know about a gold nugget placed in a rock in the Nainkelina port near the Kotmale Oya and married a son from the same area in order to obtain it.  When the time came, the Brahmin, who had sacrificed his son and obtained the golden pot, fled to a nearby field to soothe his tiredness, and had gone to a nearby stream to drink.  It is said that when the Brahmin who drank the water returned, he was overwhelmed with grief and madness when he saw that the rock had broken and the gold had sunk into it.  Legend has it that the place where the pula was placed in that field was later called Pusulpitiya and the Pusulpitiya temple was built on the rock where the pula was placed.

History books state that the Sacred Tooth Relic was secretly placed three times in the Pusulpitiya Raja Maha Viharaya.

  •  Polonnaruwa Kalinga Magha Dynasty (1215-1236).

  • The reign of King Vijayabahu III (1232-1236)

To protect the Tooth Relic from the crisis caused by the British conquest of the upcountry in 1815, the temple was hidden in a sapling grove from April 6 to 22, 1815.  Today, this white tree is known as the Tooth Relic.
