Kumana National Park is famous mainly for its migratory birds. It is located 391 km off the southeast coast of Colombo. Dates changed to current name.The park was closed from 1985 to March 2003 due to the Sri Lankan civil war, which was severely affected by the 2004 tsunami.
Kumana Bird Sanctuary was declared in 1938 as a landfill site, including Kumana National Park. Sri Lanka is one of the most important habitats and breeding grounds in Sri Lanka. About 255 species of birds are recorded from this national park.
