   🙏Ruhunu Maha Katharagama Dewalaya🙏

It is one of the few sacred cities in Sri Lanka and is worshiped by the majority of Sri Lankan Buddhists, a small number of Tamils, Hindus and Muslims and the indigenous Vedda people.  It is a collection of several shrines dedicated to Skanda Murukan, also known as the God of Kataragama.  For the past thousand years it has been a difficult place to reach, and today it is accessible through all climatic conditions.  Sacrifices were also made to the gods and the mosque. After 1940, the majority of pilgrims were Tamil Hindus from Sri Lanka and southern India. They barely made the pilgrimage on foot.

The pilgrimage was very famous.  There are many myths and legends about God and the land, which vary according to religion, ethnic affiliation and time.  The way of worship changes with the change of the devotees and the floating festivals change due to the call of the Hindus to allow the Buddhist rituals and theology.  Archaeological and literary evidence suggests that the site has an ancient history, but the literary history of the site and the reasons for its popularity among Sri Lankans and Indians are difficult to reconstruct on the basis of mythology.  There is a conflict between Buddhists and Hindus over and about how to worship.
